For Helix Residence, our client’s brief was to create a timeless aesthetic that blends modern and classical elements.
We transformed a modest Californian bungalow into a warm and generous family home with sweeping harbour views. Softened forms, horizontal elements, a rendered mid-section and sandstone podium complement the home’s original character. At the home’s frontage, an original ornamental bay window required careful preservation.
Curved and rounded motifs are echoed in the home's arched entry, steel gate, stair balustrade and softened building edges, creating a harmonious tone. Large windows, open-plan spaces, and thoughtful orientation make sure the harbour is always in sight, like a living painting in the background of the family's daily life.
Living, kitchen and dining spaces are nested around a dramatic helix staircase – a piece of sculpture that connects all three levels and breaks an otherwise open arrangement of space. The oculus skylight of the spiral stair serves as a vertical light shaft, gently animating the interior.
To the rear of the property, a pool occupies the block's highest point – a spectacular lookout to the sparkling harbour, surrounded by terraced landscaping by Wyer & Co that is reminiscent of the Amalfi Coast. While the chic pool house features our Wave Sofa and Booham Chair, their rounded form following the sculptural curves of the interior and exterior.
Throughout, Helix Residence finds expression through a unique language and identifiable set of details, encapsulating our ongoing pursuit of considered simplicity.
